Journalism

Initially hesitant upon committing to a minor in communications, I opted for journalism, as I knew my writing skills would serve me greatly. However, the due diligence of investigative journalism was something new to me, and to familiarize myself with the process, I had to transition from MLA style to AP style through the use of more objective analysis and less embellishment, a stark contrast to the academic prose and creative writing I was so used to. This past spring semester, I took a course in multimedia journalism, and while initially I found the required groupwork difficult, I soon learned how to employ tact and discipline in the pursuit of a common goal or project, producing a portfolio that includes audio and video interviews, photographic storytelling, and digital editing galore. Not only have I garnered a better appreciation for group work, but I have also found success in areas I thought were otherwise out of my “league”, a far cry from the reclusive desk jockey I was in my initial college career. Furthermore, this skillset is something I can now officially add to my professional repertoire, working as a man of many trades, a young factotum.
